Today’s reflection from Ray Stedman centers on Abraham’s intercession for Sodom, not out of a desire to save the wicked city, but out of deep concern for God’s character and justice. Abraham isn’t challenging God's judgment—he acknowledges its time has come. What troubles him is a deeper, more personal question: Will the righteous be treated the same as the wicked? At stake is Abraham’s perception of God's righteousness, faithfulness, and justice.

As Abraham prays, we see a man holding tightly to what he knows of God’s goodness, even while wrestling with the dread that God may not act as he had hoped. It’s a raw, reverent exchange—an honest prayer shaped by relationship, not presumption. Abraham repeatedly lowers the bar, from fifty down to ten, not in bargaining but in pursuit of reassurance: Does righteousness matter to You, Lord? Will You honor Your covenant heart, even in judgment?

And God’s answers come—not delayed or reluctant—but immediate and gentle. With each divine “yes,” Abraham’s fear is calmed. He discovers that God's justice is never careless and His promises are never compromised. This is prayer not as persuasion, but as communion. Abraham’s trembling heart is anchored again in the faithful nature of the One he has come to trust.

I saw the weight in Abraham’s chest before he ever spoke. His trembling was not rebellion—it was reverence laced with confusion. He had walked with Me long enough to know My voice, but that day, he needed to know My heart.

I welcomed his questions. I did not shame him for his hesitation or limit his petitions. I let him speak, again and again, because I knew each question peeled back the fear that had gripped his soul. Every response I gave was a lifeline to the truth he carried deep within: that I am righteous in all My ways and faithful in all I do.

So when you approach Me with trembling, when the world doesn’t look the way you thought it should under My sovereign hand, come near. Ask. Wonder. Seek My heart. I do not recoil from your uncertainty—I draw near in it. I remind you again and again: righteousness matters. My covenant is unbreakable. I will never confuse darkness for light, nor abandon the upright in heart when judgment falls around them.

You are not lost in the crowd. You are not swept up in the flood. I know those who are Mine, and I never treat the righteous as I do the wicked. When justice rolls in, it never erases My mercy. When you stand in the gap, as Abraham did, I listen—not because you are convincing, but because you are Mine.

I delight in your intercession. I delight in your trust. Come boldly. I am always who I have said I am.

It may creak. But it will not collapse. That’s what it means to be righteous in Christ—anchored when judgment shakes the ground.

Father, thank You that Your justice is never reckless and Your mercy never sleeps. I rest in the certainty that You know those who are Yours, and You never treat Your children as strangers. Even when the world seems to unravel around me, I rejoice that You remain faithful, always acting in righteousness and love. You have made me righteous in Christ, and I stand anchored in that unshakable truth.
