The King Within Who Overcomes
When the King takes the wheel, His overcoming life directs what I cannot control.

In today’s devotional, Witness Lee points us to the deeper demand of Jesus in Matthew 5. The law of Moses prohibited the act of murder, but Jesus takes it further. He exposes the root that feeds murder, which is anger. Anger, contempt, and condemnation are heart issues that spill out in words and actions. The old covenant addressed the outward act, but the new covenant penetrates into the motive.
This can feel overwhelming when we honestly look at ourselves. Most of us cannot go a week without a flash of anger or a condemning thought. Our anger can flare suddenly, like an untamed horse breaking loose, and our contempt for others can slip out quickly. If the standard is not only our actions but also our inner motives, who among us can stand? If we fix our eyes on ourselves, discouragement quickly follows.
But the gospel truth is that Jesus does not leave us staring at our inability. He reminds us that we are kingdom people, not because we conquer anger by self-effort, but because the King Himself lives within us. The life of Jesus is not only holy but kingly and overcoming. This life within us can tame what we cannot control, subdue what we cannot master, and express love where anger once ruled.
Lee encourages us to shift our gaze. Do not stare at your natural life, which only leads to failure and frustration. Look instead at the indwelling King who is your life. In Him, you are not bound to anger, contempt, or condemnation. In Him, you are an overcomer because His overcoming life flows through you. This is the power of the kingdom: not striving in your own effort, but yielding to the reign of Jesus within.
Journal Entry – Voice of the Holy Spirit Through Scripture
My beloved, do not be disheartened when you see your weakness. I have not called you to overcome in your own strength. I have placed My Son within you, and His life is kingly and victorious. You are no longer bound to the impulses of anger, for sin shall not have dominion over you.
Fix your eyes on Him who lives in you. The King has taken His throne in your heart. As you yield to Him, His life will be expressed in place of your old patterns. What you cannot restrain, He has already conquered. What you cannot change, He transforms by His presence.
Remember that you are a new creation in Christ Jesus. You are not defined by the flashes of your old nature but by the indwelling Spirit who empowers you to love, forgive, and walk in peace. Every time anger rises, you have access to My overcoming life within. Yield to Me in that moment, and you will discover freedom from what once ruled you.

Real-Life Analogy
Think of a car with a powerful engine but no driver at the wheel. The engine roars, the car shakes, but without direction it can crash. Now picture that same car with the rightful driver seated, hands steady on the wheel, guiding it safely. Our anger is like that uncontrolled engine, powerful and destructive when left to itself. But when we yield the driver’s seat to the King within, His steady hand brings control, direction, and peace.
Today, when irritation rises in me, I can pause and quietly say, “Lord, I trust You to take the wheel of my reactions in this moment, and express Your patience and peace through me.” That simple act of yielding turns what could become chaos into an opportunity for His overcoming life to be seen.
Prayer of Confidence
Lord, I thank You that You are the King living in me. Your life is greater than my anger, stronger than my impulses, and higher than my natural ways. I rejoice that I do not face these struggles in my own strength, but in the certainty of Your overcoming life. I rest in the truth that I am a kingdom person because You, the King, reign within me.
