An Action Carried Out Toward Earthen Vessels
When the vessel is broken, the treasure inside begins to shine.

God often allows His children to face situations that strip them of their own resources—not as punishment, but as preparation. Today’s devotional from Bob Hoekstra explores how our Father lovingly leads us into circumstances we cannot handle on our own so that the life of Jesus might be revealed in our humanity. We are the “earthen vessels,” fragile and limited by design, and yet chosen to contain and display the surpassing power of Christ within.
Paul’s life was filled with examples of this divine pattern. He was frequently overwhelmed, afflicted, and faced with death. These weren’t random hardships—they were purposeful deliverances into weakness so that Jesus could shine through. The treasure of Christ in us becomes visible precisely because the vessel is not the source. We are not told to survive by our own strength. Rather, we are continually being “delivered to death” that we might learn to trust in God who raises the dead—and in doing so, Christ’s life is manifested in our mortal bodies.
This kind of living feels like dying because it is: dying to self-sufficiency, dying to self-reliance, dying to the illusion that we are in control. But in that surrender, the surpassing life of Jesus flows out—radiating through the cracks and limitations of our earthly frame.
✨ Journal Entry – Voice of the Holy Spirit
You are not failing when you feel overwhelmed—you are being invited. Each moment of inadequacy is an open door into My sufficiency. You are a vessel shaped for more than comfort. I formed you to carry My life, and My life is most visible when your strength fades.
Do not fear when you are delivered into impossible circumstances. I allowed this—for Jesus’ sake. My purpose is not to burden you, but to reveal the life that already fills you. As your self-effort falls away, My Son rises up. As you lose control, My peace takes its place. As you die to your striving, His rest becomes your rhythm.
Look again at your fragile places. That is where the treasure is displayed. Let the cracks remain. Let the tears flow. Let the groaning turn to trust. In your mortal body, eternal life is shining through.
Let the sentence of death be the prelude to resurrection. Let your limits be the loudest testimony of My limitless grace.

🪟 Real-Life Analogy
It’s like trying to carry a full watering can made of thin paper. It bends, leaks, and even breaks under the weight. But when light hits the water through the torn places, it sparkles—because the focus is no longer the container, but what’s inside. Our lives, cracked and soaked by suffering, shimmer with the life of Christ when we stop trying to hold ourselves together and instead allow Him to flow through every broken seam.
🙏 Prayer of Confidence
Father, I thank You that I don’t need to pretend to be strong or act as if I have what it takes. You have already given me Jesus—the treasure in this frail vessel. Every impossible situation is an invitation to trust, not to strive. You have not left me to handle life in my own strength, but You have ordained each step to display the life of Christ in me. I rest in that today. Let His life be seen in my weakness, His peace in my chaos, His endurance in my pressure, and His joy in my tears. I trust You fully, because You are the One working in me.
