Where You Make Me Rest

When the engine stops and stillness settles, the seat becomes a sanctuary—just like abiding in Christ.

In this beautiful entry from Days of Heaven, A.B. Simpson draws us into the tender intimacy of Song of Songs 1:7, where the soul longs to know where her Beloved shepherds His flock and causes them to rest. It’s not a mere theological inquiry—it’s the desperate cry of a soul wearied from striving, from trying to live a spiritual life through self-effort.

Simpson reminds us that this longing is answered not in more doing, but in abiding. The answer is not found beside the flocks of His companions, where imitation and comparison breed restlessness. No—it is found in Him alone. The soul wants to know where Christ Himself leads, feeds, and causes His beloved ones to rest at noon—when the sun is highest and the weight of the day is greatest.

This devotional pulls back the veil to show us that rest is not a concept—it’s a Person. Rest is found in Christ’s exclusive, intimate love. It is a love so complete, so perfectly personal, that each one of us can recline on His chest and know we are entirely, unshakably His. And yet, His love is so boundless that millions may do the same, and none are left wanting. In Him, all our questions are settled. All our longings are met. All our striving ceases. He is the pasture and the rest.

Journal Entry – Voice of the Holy Spirit
You don’t have to search for Me among the noise of others’ paths. I have drawn you to Myself. You were never meant to follow Me from a distance, nor settle for secondhand nourishment. I make you lie down in green pastures, not just to rest your body, but to still your soul. I am your Shepherd, and I know you by name.

You were never veiled to Me. I see you clearly. I invite you into the warmth of My presence, not as a servant standing by, but as My beloved, resting where I lead you. At midday—when the world demands the most of you—I offer stillness. When your soul is scorched by the heat of performance, I become your shade, your portion, your peace.

Come away from the fray of comparison and the echo of others’ voices. Let Me feed you from My own hand. Let Me quiet you with My love. This is not earned; this is yours. For I have loved you with an everlasting love, and I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.

You are not one among many in My eyes. You are Mine. And just as the sun reflects wholly in each still pool, so I dwell fully in you.

Real-Life Analogy
It’s like sitting in your car after a long drive, engine off, hands resting in your lap, and silence surrounding you. The AC hums gently, and the world slows. You’re not going anywhere, and you don’t need to. In that moment, the seat becomes a sanctuary—not because it’s a special place, but because it holds your rest. That’s what it’s like to recline in Christ—no pressure to perform, just presence.

Prayer of Confidence
Lord Jesus, I am overwhelmed with gratitude that You have given me rest, not merely as an idea, but as Yourself. You are my midday shade, my quiet place, my Shepherd and my rest. I no longer strive to earn a place beside You—I rejoice that I already belong to You, completely, exclusively, eternally. Thank You for drawing me close, for feeding me from Your hand, and for letting me rest upon Your heart. I trust You to live this restful life through me today.
