The Hidden Chains of Worldliness
Though the waves of the world rise again and again, in Jesus we stand secure on solid ground.

Ray Stedman takes us into Jeremiah 46, where the prophet describes Egypt’s defeat at Carchemish. Though the battle was historical, its imagery continues to speak. Egypt, in Scripture, often symbolizes the world system that draws God’s people back toward bondage. Israel longed for the food and comforts of Egypt even after God freed them, just as we sometimes crave what enslaves us. Egypt becomes more than geography. It represents a mindset: living for pleasure, for comfort, for self rather than for the glory of God.
Stedman makes it clear that worldliness is not about certain outward activities. It is an attitude of life. The world’s pull is to think as it thinks, chase what it chases, and measure worth by its standards. Egypt rises like the Nile in Jeremiah’s vision, with surging waves that return again and again. Even when we think we have overcome, the temptation rises once more, luring us to return to its false security. But God has already given us victory through union with Jesus.
Another detail from Jeremiah adds depth. Pharaoh is called “the noisy one who lets the hour go by.” What a fitting picture of the world’s distractions. Noise drowns out reflection. Entertainment and urgency numb us to eternal realities. The world promises fullness but delivers emptiness. Its pleasure is passing, its noise is hollow, its bondage is cruel. God, however, calls His people to walk in the freedom of His Spirit, where joy, peace, and lasting satisfaction abound.
Stedman’s reflection reminds us that while the world rises in waves, the life of Jesus within us stands steady. The allure of worldliness loses its grip when we see it for what it is. We have been raised with Him, not to sink back into slavery, but to live in freedom. Gratitude, worship, and obedience become our protection against Egypt’s pull.
Journal Entry – Voice of the Holy Spirit Through Scripture
My beloved, you are no longer a slave to the world’s lure. I have set you free in My Son, and you are complete in Him. Egypt may rise like the Nile, surging against you, but I am your refuge and your strength. You need not yield to its noise or be carried by its waves.
The world calls with promises of pleasure and comfort, but you have died to sin and been raised with Jesus. Your life is hidden with Christ in Me. Do not be deceived by the loud voices that clamor for your attention, for My Spirit whispers truth and peace. The world kills time, but I redeem every moment.
You are not destined for bondage, but for freedom. I have given you a new heart and placed My Spirit within you. Fix your mind on things above, not on the distractions of Egypt. Walk in step with Me, and I will express My life through you. Rest in the truth that you belong to Me, and no wave of the world can sweep you away.

Real-Life Analogy
Think of standing at the ocean’s edge as the tide comes in. The waves rise higher, washing over your feet. Each one feels strong, yet they always recede, leaving you standing firm on solid ground. In the same way, the world rises in surges of temptation. But in Jesus, you are not swept away. You remain secure because your life is anchored in Him.
Today, when noise or distraction comes rushing in, I can pause and quietly affirm, “Lord, I trust You to live Your life through me in this moment.” That shift of trust turns the rising tide of worldliness into an opportunity for His steady life to shine.
Prayer of Confidence
Lord, I thank You that I am no longer under the bondage of this world. In You I have freedom, peace, and joy that Egypt can never offer. You have already given me victory in Jesus, and I rejoice that Your life in me is stronger than any surge of temptation. I rest today in Your faithfulness, confident that You are enough for every moment I face.
