Acts 6 gives such a kind picture of church life. The Twelve saw a real need at the tables, then asked the family to choose servants known to be full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. They were not dismissing practical work. They were honoring it by asking heaven to supply the people and the power for it.
The lesson reaches into our week. The Lord cares about budgets, schedules, and the way we handle details. Jessie Penn-Lewis once warned about leaning on clever methods that look like good business while lacking life. Acts 6 moves us in a better direction. Seek people and plans that carry the Holy Spirit’s wisdom. Trust the Lord to guide both the Word and the work.
This is not a sacred versus secular split. Waiting on tables mattered. Prayer and the ministry of the Word mattered. When the family aligned with the Spirit’s way, the Word of God spread, and many believed. That is the pattern. Dependence, wise delegation, steady prayer, and shared service.
Thank you, Nick Harrison, for curating readings like this. They remind us that the Spirit of Jesus is not only present in the sanctuary. He is present in the kitchen, the spreadsheet, the staff meeting, and the phone call. He knows how to help us love people well while getting the work done.
Journal Entry, Voice of the Holy Spirit Through Scripture
I give wisdom from above. Ask in faith, and I give generously. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Me, and I make your paths straight. Be filled with the Spirit. Walk by the Spirit. Do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to the Father through Him.
I call you to serve with one mind and purpose. Count others more significant than yourself. Let your speech always be gracious. Use the gift I have given to serve others as a good steward of My varied grace. The manifestation of the Spirit is given to each for the common good. Present your body as a living sacrifice. Do not be conformed to this age. Be transformed by the renewal of your mind, so you may discern what is good and pleasing and perfect.
I guide you in practical choices. Appoint faithful people who are full of the Spirit and wisdom. Devote yourself to prayer and to the ministry of the Word. As you abide in Me, you will bear much fruit. I teach you. I remind you of all that Jesus said. I lead you into all the truth. I instruct you and watch over you. You will hear a word behind you, this is the way, walk in it.
I strengthen you with all power according to My glorious might. Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God. I give you peace that guards your heart and mind in Christ Jesus. From this place of rest, work becomes worship.

Real-Life Analogy
Think about power steering in a car. Turn the wheel with the engine off and it feels heavy. Start the engine and the same wheel turns smoothly. The road is still the road, but a quiet power helps every movement. The Holy Spirit does that in our ordinary work. He supplies a steady help within, so decisions and conversations move with clarity and kindness rather than strain.
Try this today. Before you enter a meeting or open your inbox, pause for a few seconds and set your attention on the Lord. Say, Lord, I trust You to steer my words and choices as You work through me. Then look for one small way to serve a person while you complete the task.
Prayer of Confidence
Father, thank You for giving me the Holy Spirit and for uniting me with Jesus. Thank You that wisdom from above is mine in Him, and that You care about the work on my desk and the people beside me. I receive this day as worship. I welcome Your guidance in every decision. Lord, I trust You to supply insight and love as You express Your life through me.
