Pointing to Jesus Alone

Like a spotlight revealing the main figure, our lives shine brightest when they point only to Jesus.

E. Stanley Jones warns against a subtle danger that can creep into ministry and Christian life: drawing attention to ourselves rather than to Jesus. Paul’s words in Philippians 1:26 remind us that his whole purpose was that others would have ample cause to glory in Jesus Christ because of him. Paul lived not for his own recognition, but for Christ to be magnified through his life. This devotional presses us to examine whether our words and actions highlight ourselves or direct people to the Savior.

Jones offers piercing examples. A preacher may inscribe on the pulpit, “Sir, we would see Jesus,” yet still end up drawing attention to himself through stories, style, or performance. Even small acts, like an organist embellishing a hymn to showcase skill, can distract from the One who deserves the glory. The goal is never to leave people saying, “What a wonderful preacher,” but rather, “What a wonderful Savior.”

The devotional recalls the story of Mary being reminded by Jesus that she was there to introduce Him, not to wait for another. In the same way, our calling is simple: we are not here to present ourselves but to present Jesus. The African pastor’s words capture this beautifully: “I’m not here to show my clothes or talk of myself, but to talk of Jesus.” True fruitfulness comes when self fades and Christ is all.

Jones urges us to remember Paul’s example of self-forgetfulness. Paul lost himself in the glory of Christ, and in doing so, he was remembered in immortality. When we try to insert ourselves into the story, we fade. When we forget ourselves and exalt Jesus, we live in the richness of eternal significance. This is the way of abiding life—resting in Christ and making Him known, not ourselves.

Journal Entry – Voice of the Holy Spirit Through Scripture

My beloved, remember that I have not called you to make much of yourself but to make much of Jesus. When you live to promote your own image, the fragrance of My Son is hidden. But when you yield to Me and let Jesus shine, others see His beauty and are drawn to Him.

You are crucified with Him, and it is no longer you who live, but He who lives in you. The life you now live is to display His goodness, His grace, and His glory. Let your words and your actions be a mirror that reflects His face. Do not worry about being forgotten, for in losing yourself you will find that His life in you is unforgettable.

As you walk with others, let their attention rest not on your gifts or your efforts but on Jesus who indwells you. I will gently correct you when pride stirs, and I will remind you that your sufficiency is in Him. In every situation, set your heart to introduce Jesus. This is the path of joy, the secret of lasting fruit, and the testimony of a life hidden with Christ in God.

Real-Life Analogy

Think of a spotlight at a concert. The crowd does not look at the light itself but at what it reveals. The brighter the spotlight, the less attention is on the bulb, and the more clearly the performer is seen. Our lives are like that spotlight. If we try to draw attention to the bulb, we miss the point. Our role is to illuminate Jesus so that He is seen and praised.

Today, if I am tempted to highlight myself, I can quietly yield and say, “Lord, I trust You to live Your life through me right now, shining so that others see only You.” In conversations, service, or even small daily interactions, His Spirit within me can point people to Him rather than to me.

Prayer of Confidence

Lord, I thank You that my life is hidden with Jesus in You. I rejoice that You have freed me from the pressure to promote myself. My joy is to make much of Jesus, for all glory and honor belong to Him. I rest in the truth that as I yield to You, others will see Him more clearly through me. May every word, every action, and every moment shine the light of Jesus alone.
