Our God of Promises
Your footing is secure when you rest on God’s promises.

Today’s reading from Bob Hoekstra reminds us that the Christian life is anchored not in our promises to God, but in His promises to us. Scripture doesn’t require us to vow things to God, but it does reveal a God who delights in making—and keeping—promises. From the earliest moments of human failure in Genesis 3, God spoke a promise of rescue and victory, one that foretold the cross of Christ and His triumph over Satan.
Even when spiritual warfare was certain, God’s plan for deliverance was already in motion. He promised enmity between the serpent and the woman, and a bruising of the serpent’s head through the Seed—Jesus. That promise became a thread woven through all of Scripture, through every skirmish with the enemy, through every generation’s struggle, until Christ fulfilled it in His death and resurrection.
And now, we stand not on our pledges, but on His. We may speak words of commitment, but our confidence flows from what He has said: “I will never leave you.” “You are Mine.” “I will complete the work I began.” The warfare may still rage, but our footing is firm—because our God is a God of promises, and He cannot lie.
📓 Journal Entry – Voice of the Holy Spirit through Scripture:
My child, before you ever considered promising Me anything, I had already spoken My promises over you. I declared victory before you knew the battle. I bound Myself to your redemption while you were still fallen. I made you Mine, not by your vow, but by My Son’s blood.
The war you face is real—but it is not yours to win. I already bruised the serpent’s head when Christ bore the cross. The enmity you feel is not proof of failure, but a sign that you belong to Me. In the struggle, remember what I have said: I will never leave you. I have delivered you from this present evil age. I have given you all you need for life and godliness.
So walk in the truth of what I have promised. When you speak, let your words echo Mine. When you feel pressure to prove yourself, rest in the Word I have spoken over you. I am not waiting for your performance—I am delighting in your dependence. My promises are the foundation, the fuel, and the finish line.
(Scriptures: Genesis 3:15; Hebrews 13:5–6; Psalm 18:1; James 4:15; Galatians 1:3–4; 2 Peter 1:3; 1 Corinthians 1:8–9)
🔍 Real-Life Analogy:
It’s like stepping onto a bridge that looks fragile but is actually made of steel. You might hesitate at first, unsure if it will hold. But once you place your full weight on it, you realize—it never depended on you. The bridge was already engineered to carry the load. So it is with God’s promises. Our faith doesn’t hold them up. They hold us up.
🙏 Prayer of Confidence:
Father, thank You for anchoring my life in Your promises. I rejoice that even when I waver, Your Word remains unshaken. You declared my victory before I was born and sealed it in Christ before I ever believed. Today, I live not by striving to keep up with You, but by resting in what You’ve already spoken over me. Your Word is enough. Your grace is enough. And I walk forward today, carried by promises that cannot fail.
