Ministry of Death versus Ministry of Life

Living by grace is like breathing freely after gasping through a straw—fresh, full, and free.

Today’s reading from Bob Hoekstra presents a striking contrast between two ways of living and ministering: the ministry of death and the ministry of life. Drawing from 2 Corinthians 3, the “ministry of death” refers to the law-based approach that demands righteousness but provides no power to fulfill it. This approach, though originally glorious in its intent, ultimately results in frustration and spiritual deadness when used as a standard for living.

In contrast, the “ministry of life” flows from the new covenant of grace through the indwelling Holy Spirit. This is not about external rules or striving—it’s about internal transformation by God’s sufficiency. Ministries rooted in law often carry the scent of judgment, hypocrisy, and striving. But where grace reigns, there is gentleness, authenticity, and peace. The presence of Christ’s Spirit brings a life-giving aroma, not the cold pressure of performance.

Every believer and every church operates under one of these ministries. We either rely on ourselves and burden others with expectations, or we draw from Christ’s life within and point others to His sufficiency. God’s plan was never for us to die trying—but to live by trusting.

Personalized Journal Entry — Voice of the Holy Spirit

My child, I have not called you to a ministry of death, but to one of life. I do not weigh you down with expectations that originate from your own ability to perform. That burden was nailed to the cross. The law could show you the standard, but it could never give you life. That is why I gave you Myself.

I am the Spirit who gives life. I live within you to express love instead of judgment, humility instead of self-righteousness, peace instead of striving. You no longer minister from the outside in but from the inside out—drawing from the life of Christ in you.

Let Me overflow through you as gentleness when the world expects harshness, as authenticity when others settle for appearances, and as rest when others push for performance. The ministry I entrust to you is not yours to manufacture; it is Mine to manifest. You need only abide, and I will bear the fruit.

Turn from the ministry of demand. Embrace the ministry of dependence. You were not meant to offer death wrapped in religious effort. You were meant to radiate life—My life.

Real-Life Analogy

Trying to live by law is like trying to breathe through a straw while running uphill—you might survive for a moment, but you’ll soon feel the panic of insufficiency. In contrast, grace is like stepping into fresh mountain air. You don’t make the air; you breathe it in. Life flows when you stop gasping and start receiving.

Prayer of Confidence

Father, I rest in the life You’ve already given me through Christ. I don’t have to minister from my own resources, and I don’t need to pressure others to live from theirs. Thank You for replacing the burden of striving with the breath of grace. You are the life within me—gentle, sufficient, and true. I trust You to express that life through me today.
