Willing to Be Spent

A life poured out isn’t emptied—it’s filled by the Source within.

Today’s reflection from Miles Stanford draws us into the deeper cost—and privilege—of sacrificial service. God’s mercy is not only the means of our salvation but also the foundation of our service. We are not asked to serve from obligation or guilt, but by the mercies of God, as those who have already received everything in Christ. His mercies inspire us to yield our very lives to Him in love, not just in words but in action.

Paul’s writings reveal that sacrificial service isn’t always met with applause. He rejoiced in his suffering for the Church, and in so doing, showed us that joy and distress often walk hand-in-hand when our lives are poured out for others. True ministry embraces both the laughter and the tears, not as contradictions but as companions in the holy task of bearing Christ’s life to others.

We are reminded through the quoted reflections that real ministry costs something. To love deeply is to open ourselves up to pain, especially when that love is not returned. Yet it is here that the heart of Christ is most clearly revealed through us. Service that flows from Christ within is not measured by convenience but by a willingness to be spent—even when misunderstood, unthanked, or unnoticed.

To serve sacrificially is not a call to burnout or burden, but to deeper surrender—a joyful yielding of ourselves to the One who first gave Himself for us. As we rest in Him, we find we can pour out what He continually pours in: love, patience, endurance, and a life that bears fruit for eternity.

Journal Entry – Voice of the Holy Spirit Through Scripture

Beloved, I dwell in you, not merely to comfort you, but to express My life through you. My love is not passive; it lays itself down. And as you abide in Me, My Spirit leads you not to ease but to eternal purpose. You were chosen not only to receive My grace, but to become a vessel of it—a living channel through which I pour Myself out to others.

The path of service may carry sorrow, but it never lacks joy. My joy is not bound to how others respond to you. It springs from your union with Me. When you pour yourself out for others and receive nothing in return, I see. When your love is met with silence or suspicion, I remain your reward. Your labor in Me is never in vain.

I carried the cross not because I was loved by all, but because I loved all. In you, I continue that same self-giving love. Do not count the cost as loss. I am your portion. You may be spent—but you will never be empty. I fill what is poured out. I replenish what is surrendered.

Let My Spirit guide you today to surrender—not under pressure, but under grace. My yoke is easy, and My burden is light, because I carry it with you and in you. You are not asked to produce sacrificial love—only to yield to the One who is Love and dwells in you fully.

Real-Life Analogy

Picture someone wringing out a soaked sponge. Every drop that falls from it had to first be absorbed. It’s the same with you: when you are poured out in service, you’re not depleted because you are soaked through with God’s presence. The more you yield, the more He supplies. The wringing may feel like loss, but it’s simply the transfer of what He’s placed in you to someone in need.

As you enter a demanding conversation, or respond with kindness to one who disregards you, trust Him to express His love through you. You don’t need to conjure up patience or muster compassion. Just say in your heart, “Lord, I trust You to love this person through me,” and He will. Watch as He works, not only in them, but in you.

Prayer of Confidence

Father,
Thank You that I have already received the fullness of Christ within me. I rest in the truth that I lack nothing for life or godliness. When You lead me to serve, it’s not from a place of striving, but from abundance. I rejoice in every opportunity to be poured out—knowing You are my source, my reward, and my joy. Though the world may not return love, Your love within me is constant, complete, and enough. So today, I yield again—not reluctantly, but gratefully—trusting You to live sacrificially through me. Amen.
