Anointed for the Father’s Purpose

Today’s devotional by Witness Lee reflects on the moment when Jesus, already conceived and born of the Holy Spirit, received the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove at His baptism. Although Jesus had the Spirit within from conception—having been divinely constituted and inwardly filled—He also received the outward anointing of the Holy Spirit to begin His public ministry. This distinction between internal constitution and outward commissioning is significant, and it reminds us of how Jesus fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy by being anointed to bring good news to the afflicted and liberty to the captives.
The dove, noted for its gentleness and singular focus, symbolizes how Jesus ministered—with kindness and unwavering attention to the will of His Father. His eyes, like the dove’s, were not distracted. His steps were ordered in perfect sync with the Father’s intentions. He came not to please men, not to showcase Himself, but to carry out the loving mission entrusted to Him.
Although Jesus was fully God, He did not lean on His own divine strength to begin His mission. Instead, He waited for the Father’s timing and direction, and the descending dove marked the moment of divine endorsement. It was not a power grab; it was a yielding to the Spirit’s outward empowering. Jesus, fully dependent upon the Spirit from womb to wilderness, left us an example—not to imitate from self-effort, but to follow by trusting the same indwelling Spirit.
As believers, we too are born of the Spirit—made new creations in Christ and indwelt by His life. And yet, our daily walk and our ministry also require the gentle leading and empowering of the Spirit upon us. Not to receive more of Him, but to yield to all He is within and allow His purposes to be expressed outwardly through us. Just as the dove descended gently on Jesus, so does the Spirit move gently in us—directing us with clarity, peace, and singular purpose.
Journal Entry – Voice of the Holy Spirit Through Scripture
You are Mine, beloved. Just as My Spirit descended upon the Son in gentleness, I now dwell in you with that same peace and singleness of purpose. You are not waiting for Me to arrive—I am already within you. But as you yield, I guide your steps and anoint your actions with grace.
Jesus was born of Me, just as you have been born again by My Spirit. And just as He waited upon the Father’s timing to step into His ministry, I lead you moment by moment into the works prepared for you. You do not need to strain or prove your worth. I dwell in you not to burden, but to lift; not to command from afar, but to live from within.
You have received not the spirit of fear but the Spirit of sonship. And as sons and daughters, your calling is to simply abide in My love and yield to My direction. As the dove rested on the Son, so does My presence rest on you—not in noise or chaos, but in gentleness and focus. I do not confuse. I do not coerce. I guide with a steady peace that affirms your identity and propels your purpose.
You are not without Me. Every moment of your life—whether in quietness or activity—is an opportunity to let Me minister through you. My anointing is not for performance; it is for participation in the life of Christ, expressed through yielded hearts. So walk in My rest, abide in My presence, and let the world see the fragrance of Christ released through your every word and gesture.

Real-Life Analogy
Imagine stepping into a hot shower on a cold morning. At first, the warmth doesn't seem to cover you completely. But then, as the water flows, you begin to relax under its steady stream. You don’t strain to make the water fall—you just stand under it, letting it do what it’s meant to do. You yield.
In the same way, the Spirit doesn’t force His way into your life. He’s already present, already indwelling. But when you choose to yield and remain under His gentle direction—moment by moment—you are bathed in His purpose. There’s no striving, only abiding. Today, when you're tempted to step ahead in your own energy or hesitate in fear, take a moment and whisper with confidence, "Lord, I trust You to express Your life through me in this moment." Then respond gently to your spouse. Or patiently with your coworker. Or with clarity in that decision. Just stand under the flow. He’s already there.
Prayer of Confidence
Father, thank You that I don’t need to search for another outpouring—You’ve already given me Your Spirit in fullness through Christ. I rest in the truth that I am born of the Spirit and now walk by the Spirit. Just as You anointed Jesus to bring healing, hope, and liberty, You now express His life through me in gentle, purposeful ways. I trust You to live through me today, confident in Your presence and empowered by Your peace. Amen.
