Believing and Acting Upon the Lord’s Word

Trusting the unseen Word more than the visible waves.

When Jesus called Peter to step out of the boat and walk toward Him, Peter acted on a single word—“Come.” For a brief moment, faith triumphed over circumstance. The waves beneath his feet were no longer his support; the Lord’s word was. But as soon as Peter shifted his attention to the wind, the visible world grew larger than the voice that had called him, and he began to sink.

Faith, as Witness Lee reminds us, is not willpower or human resolve. It is the simple trust of the heart that takes Jesus at His word. Faith acts because it has heard from the Lord. It does not measure the size of the storm or the strength of the current; it rests on the reality that His word carries the same power today as when it first spoke light into darkness. When we act upon His word, we discover that faith is not a leap of human courage but the quiet step of dependence on His indwelling life.

The Lord never called us to manage our own faith or muster bravery on command. He calls us to trust His word as living and active within us. Just as Peter’s feet found footing upon the word “Come,” so our hearts find stability as we respond to the voice of Jesus who abides within. Every step of trust is really His step through us, the life of the risen Lord expressing confidence in His own power.

Faith, then, is not an effort to prove ourselves spiritual; it is the overflow of resting in Him who never fails. When we set our eyes on Him instead of the wind, His peace steadies us, and His strength carries us forward.

Journal Entry – Voice of the Holy Spirit Through Scripture

My child, when you hear My word, do not measure your ability to obey. Measure instead My faithfulness to accomplish what I speak. I dwell within you, and My word carries its own power. Peter walked not because he understood how, but because he trusted the One who called. Trust Me the same way. I am the One who speaks, the One who sustains, and the One who brings My word to completion. Do not let the noise of circumstance become louder than My voice. Keep your gaze on Me, for I am your foundation under the waves. My grace is sufficient in every gust of wind, and My peace steadies every trembling heart. Yield to Me, and you will find that what I ask, I perform through you.

Real-Life Analogy

Stepping out of a boat into rough water feels a lot like following the Lord’s prompting when logic says “stay put.” It might resemble reaching out to reconcile with someone who has hurt you, or beginning a task that feels beyond your ability. The natural mind sees the waves; the Spirit within whispers, “Come.” As you move forward, remember that you are not walking alone. The same Jesus who invited Peter now lives within you, empowering each step. Instead of trying to muster courage, simply rest in His life working through you. You might say, “Lord, You have spoken. I trust You to carry me in this moment as You fulfill Your word through me.”

Prayer of Confidence

Lord, thank You that Your word is living within me, able to bring about all that You desire. I rest in the certainty that when You speak, You also provide the faith and the power to act. I praise You that every promise in You is already Yes and Amen. You are my solid ground even when the waters roar.
