All or Nothing

One road. One Master. The path of undivided devotion.

Today’s reflection from A.B. Simpson presses us into the uncompromising truth of Matthew 6:24: no one can serve two masters. Jesus isn’t simply advising us to pick the better of two pursuits—He is revealing the impossibility of divided allegiance. We were not made to toggle between competing devotions. Our hearts will gravitate fully to one and eventually turn against the other. There is no middle ground.

The danger is subtle: many believe they are giving God some of their attention, some portion of their energy. But partial devotion is no devotion at all. It becomes a spiritual deception that blinds us until full drift has occurred. Scripture offers tragic examples—Saul, Balaam, and Judas—all of whom failed to love God with an undivided heart. In contrast, Mary, Paul, and countless others illustrate the freedom, clarity, and fruitfulness that comes from single-hearted surrender.

This isn't a call to effortful striving, but to exclusive trust. To give God our whole heart is to rest in His unfailing sufficiency, to delight in His nearness, and to know the stability of a life anchored in One. God responds to such trust with special intimacy and divine faithfulness. He sets us on high—not because of performance, but because of affection. The question remains: Is it truly all for Jesus? Or is there a rival quietly sharing the throne of your heart?

I did not fashion your heart to be divided. I created you for union—complete, unbroken fellowship with Me. The moment you try to serve both Me and another master, you forfeit the joy of resting in My sufficiency.

I know when your affections are mixed. I see when you draw near with your lips while your heart lingers elsewhere. But I do not shame you—I call you back. I invite you to return to the simplicity of devotion, where your soul can breathe and your mind can be renewed.

Look to those who gave Me their whole hearts. Did I ever forsake them? I delivered David. I gave wisdom to Mary. I granted Paul a crown that does not fade. You do not have to strive to be like them—just abide in Me, as they did. One master. One love. One Lord.

The moment you say yes to Me alone, I carry the weight of everything else. You are not meant to balance your loyalties. You are meant to surrender them. And in surrender, you find joy. I do not disappoint the one whose heart is wholly Mine.

🧺 Real-Life Analogy

It’s like trying to drive a car while holding two steering wheels going in opposite directions. Even if you think you can manage both, you’ll eventually crash. Letting go of the counterfeit wheel is the only way to move forward in peace and safety. Surrender isn’t the loss of control—it’s the beginning of direction.

🙏🏼 Prayer of Confidence

Father, thank You that You are not one among many loves, but the One my heart was made for. I rejoice that I no longer need to juggle affections or serve lesser masters. You have taken me for Yourself, and in Christ, You have given me a heart that delights to follow You alone. I rest today in the joy of being fully Yours—no divided loyalties, no anxious striving. Just peaceful surrender to the One who loves me without rival.
